Centre Radio started broadcasting back in 1984, created by Stuart King on the 14th of October, from a shed in some remote part of Nottingham. The broadcast frequency being 104.5fm, or whichever channel the transmitter decided to drift to. The station rapidly gathered interest and new presenters due to the fact that at the time it was the only pirate radio station on the air in Nottingham.
Other presenters on the station included Andy Sham and Mr.T. and others followed. Dave Rush, Roger Ramjet and Eddie Austin joined a little later on.
In 1994 Centre Radio purchased and re-built a 100 watt FM broadcast transmitter and fed it into an aerial some 50ft above ground level. The signal was better than ever. More presenters joined in the fun. Ian Lawrence, Dave Norris, Dave Dickenson, Chris Kerry, Steve Gregson, Tony Anderson, DJ Dell and Tony Dawson. Some of these presenters also worked on other pirate stations or ran their own station too.
Later in the 90's the Free Radio Network formed, consisting of four pirate stations: Centre Radio, Castle Radio, Buzz Fm and City FM. The four stations linked together each in its own studio giving the area huge coverage on four seperate frequencies. Live programmes went out every Wednesday and Thursday evening. All four presenters would be on together as if it was coming from one studio! It was fantastic fun and the listeners loved the live interaction.
Then at no particular time, the FM radio broadcasts ceased in early 2000. Pressure was mounting by the authorities to get us off the air. Two of the network stations were raided, the other two fell silent..... That was the end, so we thought. And now let's thank the internet! Centre Radio and The Free radio network lives on.
